Walter M. Vaal, 89, of Ferdinand passed away Thursday December 9, 2021 at his home in Ferdinand. Walter was born on January 20, 1932 in St. Meinrad to Odilo and Pauline (Konerding) Vaal. He was united in marriage to Viola W. Bettag on September 15, 1956 in Saint Joseph Church in Jasper.

Walter retired from DMI Furniture in Ferdinand. He was a member of Christ the King Parish, St. Ferdinand Church, and its’ St. Joseph Sodality. He was a member of Ferdinand Senior Citizens, and the Ferdinand Community Center.

Surviving are his wife, Viola W. Vaal, one son, Stan (Tres) Vaal of Birdseye. Three grandchildren, Jessica (Noe) Jacquez, Josh (Hayley) Vaal, and Jamie (Chad) Knies. Three step-grandchildren, Kris (Kim) Pauckner, Faith (Kevin) Kirby, and Edward Wineinger Jr. Four great-grandchildren and eight step-great grandchildren. Two brothers, Art Vaal of Jasper, and Elmer Vaal of Detroit, MI. Four sisters, Verena Kempf of Ireland, Irma Kempf of St. Anthony, Annie Lange of Ferdinand, and Mary Lee Luebbehusen of Haubstadt. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold A. Vaal and a sister, Delphine “Della” Reutman

Funeral services will be held at 9:00 AM Wednesday December 15, 2021 in Saint Ferdinand Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand on Tuesday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM and Wednesday from 7:00 until 8:30 AM. Online condolences may be shared at www.becherfuneralhome.com.
