A new school year is just a couple of weeks away and a new school year means new personnel. That is exactly the case with the Southeast Dubois County School Corporation and two schools in that district: Cedar Crest Intermediate School at Bretzville and Forest Park Junior-Senior High School in Ferdinand. Both schools will see a new nurse this year: Shelby Hill.

Shelby Hill is a 2010 Barr-Reeve graduate who graduated from Vincennes University Jasper with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing Science in 2018. Nurse Hill will work a split schedule for SEDSC this year; spending Tuesdays and Thursdays at Cedar Crest Intermediate and Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays over at Forest Park Junior-Senior High School.

Shelby has been a nurse for 6.5 years and was inspired to get into nursing by her Grandmother who spent over 40 years working as a surgical nurse. Mrs. Hill stated: “She was hugely influential to me, and she loved serving her patients and community, even if it meant running out of family events for an emergency surgery while she was on-call. I remember wanting to be just like her one day!” Shelby said she wanted a career that would enable her to challenge herself, serve the community, and give her the ability to make someone’s day a little brighter even in some of their most difficult moments.

Shelby stated that serving people in her community through nursing has been her life’s work and passion but she needed something more. She chose school nursing because: “It is also going to be such a blessing for me and my family to be on the same schedule and within the same school corporation as my children.”

Before accepting the position with the SEDSC, Shelby Hill “worked at Jasper OB/GYN for over 5 years working mostly in phone triage. Prior to working at Jasper OB/GYN I worked as a medical/telemetry staff nurse at Deaconess Gateway Hospital for just under a year. I also proudly served in the Indiana Army National Guard for 6 years as a Combat Medic.

Hill stated that the best part of being a school nurse is to help children in their time of need and see how she can change the trajectory of their day in most cases with a comforting smile, and gentle care. If she wasn’t a school nurse, Hill said she would most likely still be a nursing professional at Jasper OB/GYN or somewhere. If not involved in nursing at all, Hill said that she was always driven to be a teacher and that was a second career choice and passion of hers, which considering her school nursing career, is apropos.

Nurse Hill resides in Jasper with her husband Matthew and their three children.

The SEDSC returns to school on Wednesday, August 7th. Good luck to Nurse Shelby Hill, all staff, and students for a great 2024-2025 Academic School year.
