Indiana Hunt for Hunger: Hunters Can Make a Difference During Deer Season

Rising costs have made it increasingly difficult for many Indiana residents to afford basic necessities, including food. In response, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has created a program that allows hunters to help their fellow Hoosiers in need during deer hunting season.

Indiana Deer Season Dates for 2024-2025

The DNR has announced the deer hunting season dates for 2024-2025, providing hunters with several opportunities to participate:

  • Reduction Zone: Sept. 15, 2024 – Jan. 31, 2025 (where open)
  • Youth Season: Sept. 28-29, 2024
  • Archery: Oct. 1, 2024 – Jan. 5, 2025
  • Firearm: Nov. 16 – Dec. 1, 2024
  • Muzzleloader: Dec. 7-22, 2024

A Growing Program to Combat Hunger

In 2008, the Indiana DNR launched the Sportsmen’s Benevolence Fund to provide an easy way for hunters to donate their harvested deer to help fight hunger. Since its inception, the program has expanded significantly, reaching thousands of hunters across the state who have donated their deer to provide hundreds of thousands of meals for those in need.

The program, now known as Indiana Hunt for Hunger, has adopted a clearer name to communicate its mission to the public better. The initiative continues to thrive, collecting thousands of deer donations each year.

How to Participate

Hunters who wish to participate in Indiana Hunt for Hunger can do so by donating their harvested deer at one of over 50 participating processing sites across the state. Once the deer is dropped off, the meat is processed into healthy venison burgers and distributed to food banks throughout the state, providing a vital source of protein for those in need.

Local Processors

Local food processors that participate in the program, offering their services free of charge, include:

  • Wyland Processing in Winslow
  • Sievers Packing in Vincennes
  • Stahl’s Quality Meats and Lighthouse Custom Meats in Bloomfield
  • Merkley and Sons in Jasper
  • Sander Processing in Celestine
  • Ohio Valley Custom Deer Processing in English
  • Lyndell’s Processing in Paoli
  • First Capitol Meat Processing in Corydon

The Importance of Protein

Protein is a crucial component of the human body for tissue repair, enzyme and hormone production, and the building of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. Unlike fats and carbohydrates, the body does not store protein, making it essential for regular intake. By donating venison, hunters provide a valuable source of protein that can boost metabolism and lower blood pressure for those receiving the donations.

Additional Ways to Help

Even those who do not hunt can contribute to the cause. Monetary donations can be made to Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry through their “Share What You Can Spare” campaign. Every dollar donated goes towards processing more venison and distributing it to those who need it most.

Making a Difference This Deer Season

Indiana Hunt for Hunger offers hunters a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on their community.
