Two Orange County natives, Jonathan and Josh Smith, have breathed new life into a French Lick hotel, marking a significant improvement in the local hospitality scene. The brothers, who grew up in Orleans and are graduates of Purdue University, purchased Lane’s Motel in 2023 and have since embarked on a comprehensive renovation and rebranding of the property, now known as The Valley Inn & Suites.

The motel, which had not changed ownership in over 30 years, had fallen into disrepair and struggled with a less-than-ideal reputation. However, the Smiths saw potential in the property, located conveniently within walking distance of several popular Springs Valley attractions. Taking ownership last November, they immediately set to work on an extensive overhaul, aiming to elevate both the aesthetic appeal and the overall guest experience.

The renovation process was both ambitious and thorough. The motel’s exterior received a fresh coat of blue-gray paint, complemented by a new sign that better reflects the updated brand. The interior transformation was even more dramatic, particularly in the older buildings where extensive renovations were necessary. Building 2, for instance, was completely gutted and rebuilt from the foundation up. Every room now features new flooring, drywall, paint, furnishings, bedding, fixtures, and plumbing, offering guests a modern, comfortable stay.

Recognizing the importance of convenience in today’s digital age, the Smiths also revamped the motel’s online presence. A new website was launched, complete with online reservation capabilities, allowing guests to book directly through the site or through platforms like Expedia and Booking.com. Soon, the motel plans to introduce a streamlined check-in process where guests will receive an entry code via phone, enabling them to go directly to their rooms without the need to stop at the lobby.

These upgrades have not only enhanced the property’s visual appeal but also significantly improved its reputation, making it a more attractive option for travelers seeking affordable accommodations in French Lick. The Valley Inn & Suites now offers 40 rooms, including standard king and queen rooms as well as suites, catering to a variety of guest needs. The motel is particularly popular among fishermen visiting Patoka Lake and families enjoying attractions like the Polar Express at the Scenic French Lick Railway.

The Smith brothers, despite having full-time careers outside of the hospitality industry, have successfully navigated the steep learning curve that came with this new venture. Their dedication to revitalizing the property has not gone unnoticed, with local officials praising the positive impact on the area. The Orange County Economic Development Partnership has highlighted the importance of having a wide array of accommodations at different price points, and the Smiths’ efforts have played a crucial role in fulfilling this need.

With tourism in Orange County continuing to grow, the newly renovated Valley Inn & Suites stands as a testament to the potential for positive change when local entrepreneurs invest in their community. The Smiths are optimistic about the future, confident that the improvements they’ve made will attract even more visitors to the area while providing a comfortable, clean, and affordable place to stay.
