State Sen. Mark Messmer (R-Jasper) made the following statement regarding his resignation from the Indiana Senate: “It has been a great honor representing portions of southwest Indiana at the Statehouse over the last 16 years.

“Late last week, I notified Senate leadership of my plans to resign from the Senate effective Sept. 3, 2024 to focus my efforts on my upcoming congressional campaign.”

Messmer, who has served District 48 since November 2014, is transitioning from his role in the State Senate to focus on his bid for Indiana’s 8th congressional district. He previously represented the 63rd district in the Indiana House of Representatives from 2008 to 2014. In February 2024, Messmer announced his candidacy for Congress and won the Republican primary against former U.S. Representative John Hostettler.
