In a dramatic move to protect public health, the Indiana State Board of Funeral and Cemetery Service has suspended the license of Spring Valley Funeral Home in New Albany for 90 days. The decision came after a state inspection uncovered a series of troubling and dangerous conditions at the facility.

The inspection revealed several serious issues:

  • Odor of Decomposition: A pervasive smell of decomposition was detected in the embalming room, signaling serious sanitation concerns.
  • Unembalmed Body: A decedent who passed away on June 17 had still not been embalmed by June 28, highlighting a significant lapse in proper funeral practices.
  • Contaminated Embalming Room: The room was found to be in a state of disarray, with blood, flies, and other fluids contaminating its surfaces.
  • Improper Waste Management: Six large containers of medical waste were improperly stored within the embalming room, posing additional health risks.
  • Unauthorized Access: The former owner, despite lacking the necessary license, continues to reside above the funeral home and has access to the facility.
  • Improper Storage of Cremated Remains: The facility was storing the cremated remains of 15 individuals who had passed away before 2024, a violation of standard storage practices.

The board’s decision underscores a commitment to ensuring the safety and integrity of funeral services. By taking this decisive action, the board aims to address the clear and immediate hazards posed by the funeral home, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high standards in the care of the deceased.

Spring Valley Funeral Home has yet to release a public statement. The funeral home is located at 1217 E Spring Street in New Albany, Indiana which is part of Floyd County.
