A high school program from Northeast Dubois Jr/Sr High School has caught the attention of Inside Indiana Business, a leading publication in Indiana’s business community. The Jeep Engineering and Manufacturing (JEM) program, where students gain hands-on experience in engineering and manufacturing, has been spotlighted by the prominent publication, highlighting the impact this local initiative is having on both students and the regional economy.

JEM, a student-run business at Northeast Dubois, allows students to split their time between their high school education and real-world work. Under the leadership of math teacher Tina Terwiske, students engage in various design and manufacturing projects, serving local clients such as Meyer Distributing and Jasper Engines and Transmissions. The program aims to prepare students for future careers, whether they choose to continue their education in engineering or enter the workforce directly after graduation.

Founded by former teacher Audrey Case, JEM has expanded significantly in recent years, now operating throughout the school day and taking on larger projects. Students are responsible for everything from running the program’s website and handling client communications to operating equipment and meeting production deadlines. Local companies have partnered with JEM to provide real-world business experience, offering projects such as award creation for Meyer Distributing’s top vendors and 3D-printed parts for Jasper Engines.

In addition to these partnerships, JEM is branching out into other fields, including woodworking and culinary services, as part of a broader initiative known as Jeep Enterprises. This expansion is helping students gain even more diverse skills, preparing them for a wide range of career paths.

The program’s success is evident in the achievements of its students, including Brooklyn Kiefer, a graduate who was recently honored as a member of Conexus Indiana’s 2024 Rising 30 class. Many JEM students have also secured internships or part-time work with local companies, further strengthening the program’s ties to the community.
