Indiana University has temporarily suspended all fraternity and sorority social events until March 24, 2025, following reports of health and safety concerns. This decision, announced by the IU Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association, aims to address recent incidents that have raised alarm within the campus community.

In the past week, the Indiana University Police Department (IUPD) has acknowledged at least two parties where attendees suspected their drinks had been tampered with. One incident allegedly occurred at Beta Sigma Psi on February 27, and another at Beta Theta Pi on March 1. Additionally, there was an incident where an individual required medical attention after being struck in the head by a thrown beverage can at a party.

These incidents have prompted the Greek life organizations to take proactive measures. In a statement, they emphasized their commitment to accountability and the safety of their members and guests. They also indicated plans to implement updated risk management policies and a detailed action plan to ensure chapter compliance.

This is not the first time IU has intervened in Greek life activities due to safety concerns. In October 2021, fraternity parties and paired events were canceled indefinitely following multiple reports of sexual assaults on campus. The most recent incident at that time involved a reported rape at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house on October 31, 2021.

The current suspension reflects IU’s ongoing efforts to promote a safer campus environment and holds Greek organizations accountable for their actions. The university continues to work closely with student organizations to address these issues and prevent future occurrences.
