The Spencer County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam targeting families of inmates. Scammers are reportedly calling relatives and falsely claiming that payment is needed to secure an inmate’s release.

Officials stress that no legitimate law enforcement agency, including the Spencer County Jail, will ever request money over the phone for bail or any other legal matter. These scams often use urgent language to pressure victims into making quick payments.

Residents are urged to be cautious and avoid giving out personal or financial information to unknown callers. Anyone who receives a suspicious call regarding an inmate should contact the Spencer County Jail directly at 812-649-2286 to verify any claims.

Authorities encourage the community to stay alert and report any potential scams to law enforcement.
