Indiana University Police documented multiple sexual crimes linked to the university’s Greek life system just days after the end of a three-week suspension of fraternity and sorority events. The pause, which concluded March 24, was originally implemented to address health and safety concerns among student organizations.

According to the police crime log, a rape involving sexual assault with an object was reported on March 27, along with two reports of sexual battery on March 27 and 28. The incidents were forwarded to IUPD by the university’s Title IX office and were not reported directly to the police. No specific Greek chapters were identified, and the reports were categorized under “all other fraternity/sorority.” The cases have been referred to university officials for further review.

While the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association called for the temporary halt in Greek activities, they have not disclosed what specific actions or changes were made during that time to improve safety.

Several Greek organizations at IU have also faced disciplinary action this academic year. Phi Sigma Kappa was placed under an interim directive on March 28, barring all new member activities. This came after the Title IX office reported a December 6 incident involving domestic battery and strangulation at the fraternity’s house. That case, like others, was not reported directly to the police and has been referred to the university for review.

Sigma Delta Tau sorority resumed regular operations after a cease and desist order was lifted on March 4. The group had been under investigation for two hazing reports from late January and early February.

These developments are part of a broader pattern of disciplinary actions within IU’s Greek life. In October 2023, Sigma Alpha Epsilon was placed on cease and desist for hazing, marking the third fraternity to receive such an order within two months. By November 2023, Kappa Alpha Psi became the fifth fraternity to face similar sanctions since August of that year. Additionally, Delta Upsilon was placed on cease and desist in October 2023 for endangering others and hazing, and Sigma Chi faced the same action in November 2024 for hazing allegations.
