Harvest season is quickly approaching for Indiana farmers, and with cooler weather and the fall colors, motorists will notice more large, slow-moving farm equipment on rural roads and highways. The Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) is encouraging drivers to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines when navigating around farm vehicles this season.

Equipment on the roads may include tractors, combines, grain carts, grain wagons, and large trucks hauling agricultural products. These vehicles are often wide, sometimes taking up most of the road, and generally travel at speeds no greater than 25 mph.

ISDA offers the following safety tips for motorists approaching farm equipment:

  • Farmers will pull over when possible to let vehicles pass, but it may take time to reach a safe location.
  • Be patient; farm equipment often occupies much of the road.
  • Only pass when safe, avoiding “No Passing Zones” or areas within 100 feet of intersections, railroad crossings, bridges, elevation changes, or tunnels.
  • Do not assume a vehicle is yielding; a slow-moving tractor may be preparing to turn left.
  • Avoid tailgating, as farm equipment may stop suddenly.
  • Plan extra travel time, use alternate routes when possible, and minimize distractions.

By staying alert and courteous, drivers can help ensure a safe harvest season for everyone on Indiana roads.
