After more than a year without answers, Shoals 5th grader Mirabel “Mira” Kidwell has been diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer. Mira’s family now faces ongoing medical treatments, frequent trips to Riley Hospital, and significant expenses related to her care.

Mira will begin treatment this week with the placement of a port followed by chemotherapy. Surgery is scheduled for this winter, with additional rounds of chemotherapy to follow. Her family asks for prayers and support, hoping Mira can once again enjoy her favorite activities, including softball and dance.

To help the Kidwell family, a GoFundMe has been established, with all proceeds going directly to Mira’s care and medical expenses. Donations can be made at Mira’s Miracle GoFundMe.

Several community events have been organized to support Mira. The Shoals Lady Jug Rox Volleyball team will host a donation soup supper on Thursday, September 11, ahead of their home game against West Washington. The event begins at 5 p.m. in the Shoals High School Home Economics Room and will continue until supplies run out, with all proceeds benefiting Mira and her family.

On Saturday, September 27, the “Mira’s Miracle” 5K will take place at the Shoals Ballpark. Registration opens at 7 a.m., with runners starting at 8:05 a.m. and walkers beginning at 8:10 a.m. The $20 registration fee can be paid via Venmo, check, or cash. Food vendors and merchandise booths will be available from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Also on September 27th, a Back Road Adventure Benefit Ride will begin at Hindostan Church, with registration from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and the ride starting at 10:30 a.m. All legal vehicles are welcome to participate in a scenic tour with stops along the route. Prize drawings will be held during the ride and a final drawing at the Church Fellowship Hall, where a soup lunch and snacks will also be provided. Donations can be dropped off at the Fellowship Hall until 10:30 a.m., and all proceeds benefit Mira.

Shoals Schools are also holding a Class Coin War fundraiser from Monday, September 8, through Friday, September 19. Students are encouraged to bring coins or cash to support Mira, with prize levels for different age groups ranging from PreK–2nd grade, 3rd–5th grade, middle school, and high school. In addition, Shoals Schools are collecting donations at every home event for the remainder of September.

A softball tournament will be held on October 4 and 5 at Shoals, featuring 8U, 10U, and 12U Class C/All-Star teams, with all proceeds benefiting Mira. Teams can register by calling or texting 812-709-0721.

The community is coming together to provide financial support, encouragement, and hope for Mira and her family. Every contribution, whether through donations or participation in events, helps make a meaningful difference in her fight against Ewing’s Sarcoma.
