As winter weather settles across Indiana, state officials are reminding residents to get prepared before conditions turn hazardous on the road. According to Indiana emergency preparedness guidance, most winter storm-related deaths happen because of vehicle crashes, often connected to icy pavement, low visibility and sudden weather changes.

Motorists are encouraged to make sure their vehicles are winter-ready — which includes checking brakes, tires, antifreeze levels, batteries and windshield systems — and to keep an emergency kit in the car that includes basic supplies in case a driver becomes stranded. Drivers are also urged to slow down, leave extra stopping distance, and use extreme caution on bridges, overpasses and exit ramps where ice tends to form more quickly.

If a vehicle becomes stuck or stranded during a winter storm, preparedness officials stress that staying inside the vehicle and conserving fuel is typically the safest option. Safety flags or colored cloth can help responders locate a vehicle, and drivers should make sure the exhaust pipe is clear before running the engine for heat.
