The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles has announced that its popular Blackout license plate design will soon be available for standard disability plates. The new Disability Blackout plate will be available beginning February 13.
The Blackout plate, featuring an all-black background with white lettering, has proven to be one of the most popular alternative license plates in Indiana. Total sales have now surpassed 100,000 in just six months, generating significant revenue for the state. Due to strong demand, the BMV is expanding the design to ensure greater access for eligible Hoosiers, including individuals with disabilities.
The Disability Blackout plate will feature the same black-and-white design along with the International Symbol of Access. It will be available for passenger vehicles, trucks weighing 11,000 pounds or less, motorcycles, and recreational vehicles for qualifying customers.
Hoosiers who need to establish eligibility for a disability license plate may complete an Application for Disability License Plate or Parking Placard. Applications can be submitted at a local BMV branch or mailed to the address listed on the form. A checklist to assist with the application process is available on the BMV’s website.
Eligible customers renewing their registration may purchase the Disability Blackout plate for an additional $45 at a BMV branch. Those wishing to replace an existing disability plate before its expiration will pay a $9.50 replacement fee in addition to the $45 plate fee. Personalized Disability Blackout plates will also be available for an additional $45.
More information, including branch locations and hours, is available at IN.gov/BMV.
