Indiana Conservation Officers are searching for a missing man after a truck was swept off a flooded roadway Monday afternoon in Martin County.

Authorities say the incident happened around 2:37 p.m. on Spout Springs Road just south of Shoals, near the White River, an area known to experience flooding during periods of high water.

According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, a passenger inside the vehicle was able to escape through a window and hold onto a nearby tree vine while calling 911 for help. Members of the Shoals Volunteer Fire Department and the Martin County Sheriff’s Department launched a rescue boat and were able to safely bring the passenger to shore.

Search crews are now working to locate the driver, 82-year-old James Petty of Fortville, whose truck was swept away in the floodwaters. Officials say swift moving water has made search efforts difficult as teams use surface searches and sonar in the area.

Agencies assisting with the response include the Martin County Sheriff’s Department, Martin County EMS, the Shoals Volunteer Fire Department, and Indiana Conservation Officers.
