Southwestern Indiana Citizens for Quality of Life (SWICQL) will host a public presentation to share findings from six recent community focus groups focused on health and environmental concerns across the region.

The event is scheduled for Tuesday, April 7, at 6:00 p.m. CDT at the Lincoln Heritage Public Library in Dale. Organizers say the presentation will highlight community experiences and priorities related to cancer, respiratory illness, air and water quality, and overall environmental conditions in southwestern Indiana.

The presentation will feature research conducted in partnership with Indiana University, including insights from Dr. Kate Eddens, an associate research scientist in epidemiology and biostatistics, and Dr. Annie Shattuck, an associate professor of geography.

Over the past year, SWICQL and the researchers gathered input from residents across the region, focusing on how environmental exposures, industrial activity, and access to clean air and water impact public health—particularly in areas where cancer and respiratory concerns remain ongoing.

The event will include a summary of key themes identified in the focus groups, along with community-raised concerns about air and water quality and patterns related to cancer and respiratory health. Organizers will also outline potential next steps for continued research, advocacy efforts, and community engagement.

The project and presentation are supported through grant funding aimed at advancing SWICQL’s mission to elevate community voices and address environmental health and quality of life issues in southwestern Indiana.
