A Huntingburg man who tried to flee from police after a traffic stop was attempted Wednesday evening landed in jail on a number of charges.

Just before 7 o’clock last night, an officer with the Huntingburg Police Department looked to pull over a mid size pickup driven by 57-year old Jonathon Eckstein of Huntingburg as his vehicle traveled north along the 300 block of Geiger Street and police say he blew a stop sign at the intersection of 4th and Geiger Streets.

Police say Eckstein attempted to elude the officer by increasing his speed and turned east on 5th Street before turning down an alleyway behind United Methodist Church before coming to a stop in a parking lot.

Police say while detaining Eckstein they could detect a strong odor of alcohol. They also say his eyes were blood shot and watery.

Eckstein failed standarized field sobriety tests and when an inventory of his pickup was conducted before being towed police say several pieces of paraphernalia and marijuana were discovered.
