The Indiana Department of Transportation says temporary median intersection closures for U.S. 231 near Dale will take place as crews continue working on an intersection improvement project to install J-Turns at State Roads 62 and 68.

Around Friday, contractors will temporarily close the intersections of State Roads 62 and 68 while workers begin installing traffic islands.

Current 12-foot lane restrictions will still be in place throughout the duration of the project and affect the area one half mile north of State Road 68 and one half mile south of 62.

Restrictions will be in place around the clock and work is expected to last into early or mid-July depending upon weather conditions.

Based on extensive study, INDOT has concluded that J-Turns will drastically improve safety at the intersections of U.S. 231 and SR 62/68. The new configuration will prevent direct crossing and left turn movements from both locations.

Movements will be made indirectly by making right turns, travelling a short distance and making a legal U-Turn. Left turns will be allowed from U.S. 231 on to State Roads 62 and 68.

INDOT officials say they have taken steps to work with local residents in tailoring the intersections’ design to area specific needs including heavy truck and local farm traffic.

INDOT urges drivers to slow down and stay alert near crews.
