The 26th Annual St. Anthony Fire Department Street Fest was not bothered by rainy forecast that was forseen this past Saturday, in fact it was filled with community support and comradery from the St. Anthony community and friends from Dubois County.

There was an incredible smell of seasoning and smoked meat setting the atmosphere for the St. Anthony Backyard BBQ Contest. The categories being judged included chicken,  pulled pork, and chili. The overall winner of the BBQ contest was team Schmoked Dis consisting of our very own WJTS Inform Spokesman Bill Potter, his wife Janice, their sons Ben and George Potter, and their daughter Jessica with her Husband Judah DeLorenzo. According to George Potter  participating as a family team holds value as they do it to support the event-cause, support his father’s interest, and achieve family time.

Another team who participated, Team 30 Pack, consisting of a group of friends from various parts of Dubois County, shared they were Grilling In ‘Pups’ honor, John Schuetter, who passed away. Mike Mullen of Team 30 Pack stated they participate as a team for the love of cooking.

Volunteer Firefighter, Nick Merkley, explains that BBQ coordinators had previously met with all teams two weeks ago for an overview of participation guidelines and indicates the contests purpose.

 


St. Anthony Fire Chief, Scott Uebelhor, says that the event started as a street fest at the fire station and then as the event expanded it was moved to an open area. He said 2 years ago the initiation of the Backyard BBQ Contest took place and during this past weekend  there were about 13 teams vying for the 2016 St. Anthony best BBQ title.

The People’s Choice Award went to Sonny Ja’s BBQ team, the Ambassador’s Award went to Plumb Crazy Grillers, and then 1st place for the Chili category was Sonny Ja’s BBQ, for the Chicken category was the Spicy Pigs, for the Pulled Pork category was the High Life Hunt Club. As previously mentioned the St. Anthony Overall BBQ winner was the Schmoke Dis team in 1st place, Sonny Ja’s BBQ in 2nd place, and Cool Breeze BBQ in 3rd place.

Along with the Backyard BBQ Contest the St. Anthony was full of activity with live music,the 20th Annual Car,Truck, & Motrocycle Show, children activities, grand raffle, and our radio partner station 101 Country WBDC’s cornhole tournament.
