One person was killed in a car vs bicycle accident in Daviess County Sunday afternoon. Shortly before 2:30 pm yesterday deputies with the Daviess County Sheriff's Department were called to an area along County Road 600 East just north of County Road 400 South where the accident took place. Authorities were also informed that the bicyclist was not breathing.
Deputies say there was a group of area bicyclist who were taking part in a ride from the Daviess County Airport to the Glendale Fish and Wildlife area. They say the last rider in the group, 64-year old Michael Thurston of Washington, was riding soutbound and was struck from behind by an SUV driven by 92-year old Robert O'Brien also of Washington. Police say Thurston was thrown from the bike and landed on a lawn on the westside of the roadway.
Other riders began to perform CPR on Thurston while waiting for emergency personnel to arrive on the scene. O'Brien who was not injured in the mishap told deputies he did not see Thurston who was wearing a yellow safety T-shirt but not a helmet before the accident took place. Thurston was taken to the Daviess Community Hospital where he was later pronounced dead due to massive internal injuries. Authorities say their investigation is continuing.
