The newspaper garnered 16 awards during the Hoosier State Press Association’s 50th annual Better Newspaper Contest Awards ceremony this past Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis, including the Blue Ribbon — the highest honor awarded and chosen from all community newspapers in the state.

Publisher Kathy Tretter says it’s still hard to believe. Tretter says the award is something every newspaper hopes to achieve but very few do, especially since many community newspapers in the state are owned by large conglomerates with access to many resources.

In addition to the Blue Ribbon, the Ferdinand News won awards in writing, photography and design categories, including first place for Best Design.

The Spencer County Leader, sister publication to the News, took second. A photo series by Eric Tretter from Forest Park’s inaugural Color Run was also a finalist for Photo of the Year and overall the Ferdinand News netted a third in General Excellence.
