A Jasper man who authorities say was driving while distracted and crashed his vehicle into the rear of a Semi Tractor-Trailer along Interstate 64 in Warrick County walked away from the scene without injuries.

Indiana State Police say at around 8:30 last night they along deputies with the Warrick County Sheriff’s Department responded to the two vehicle crash on I-64 west of Lynnville that was caused by a distracted driver.

A police investigation found that 21-year old Derek Schmitt of Jasper was driving his 2015 Ford Fusion eastbound on I-64 near the 33 and a half mile-marker when police say he looked away from the roadway to read a text message he had received.

Police say Schmitt then collided into the rear of a tractor-trailer. They say Schmitt was thankfully wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

His vehicle was a total loss

Police say the driver of the tractor-trailer who was not identified by police was not injured as well.

Police are using the incident as another example why it’s important not to drive distracted.
