Officials with Jasper Municipal Utilities say it has come to their attention that business customers have been receiving phone calls stating that a technician was en route to disconnect their utilities, due to non-payment, unless prompt payment was made.

The utility department wants everyone know that this is a scam.

A release Wednesday afternoon from the department says the caller had a foreign accent and was calling from an 800 number.

Jasper Municipal Utilities wants to remind their customers that they do NOT make phone calls prior to disconnection of services, and WILL NEVER ask for payment information over
the phone.

They say notification of impending disconnection is made in writing only.

All City of Jasper Municipal Utilities field technicians wear uniforms designating they
are a City employee and carry a City employee identification card.

Residents are asked to please be aware of this situation and do not give any payment information out over the phone.

If you have any questions about the balance on your utility account, please call Jasper Municipal Utilities at (812) 482-9131.
