The annual Cops and Kids event formerly known as Shop with a Cop is set for next Wednesday December 6th.

The program for many underprivileged children in the area pairs around 50 to 60 young boys and girls with local law enforcement personnel from several groups for an early Christmas shopping spree at the Jasper Wal-Mart store.

Program Coordinator Sgt. Adam Bower of the Jasper Police Department says most of the children involved are with the Tri-Cap Head Start program and are screened and deemed to be in need of help of obtaining a gift for Christmas.

Bower says the program is made possible by contributions provided to the Fraternal Order of Police for some needs and of course some wants for the holidays.

An estimated 60 law enforcement members take part in the event including representatives from the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department and county prosecutor’s office, the Indiana State Police, the Department of Natural Resources, as well as those from the Jasper, Huntingburg and Ferdinand Police Departments.

Bower notes that the event not only is the program and event beneficial in helping with the needs of underprivileged children but it also allows a child to see for themselves the helping hand of area law officers.

Once all the shopping is completed the children will be escorted by law officers up Newton Street to the Jasper Moose Lodge where they will be treated to lunch and get to hang with Santa Claus.

Another big event sponsored by the local Fraternal Order of Police is the annual summer kids camp in July. That event lets kids camp on the FOP’s grounds and engages them in activities like fishing and physical training.
