The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a train versus car accident that took place early Wednesday afternoon at a railroad crossing in the Southwestern part of Dubois County.

Deputies say the accident happened just before 2 pm yesterday at the crossing located at County Road 600 West and 400 South near Duff.

A Norfolk Southern Train with 85 cars and 3 engines was traveling eastbound at an estimated speed of 35-40 miles per hour.

For an unknown reason, 64 year old Shelly Schwenk of Velpen, drove her BMW passenger vehicle past the functioning signals into the crossing zone just after the lead engine passed, then struck its side. Schwenk was transported by ambulance to Memorial Hospital in Jasper with non-life threatening injuries.

Schwenk’s BMW was a total loss and the train sustained minor damage.

The roadway was closed for an hour as the crash was further investigated.

Memorial Hospital EMS assisted at the scene.
