In the early hours of August 9, 2024, a personal injury accident occurred on Newton Street in Jasper, Indiana. The incident took place at approximately 12:35 AM, involving two vehicles.

A black 1999 Mercury Mountaineer, driven by 19-year-old Jacob P. Thacker of Jasper, was traveling southbound on Newton Street. As Thacker approached the intersection at Baden Strasse, his vehicle experienced brake failure, preventing him from slowing down for the traffic light. The Mountaineer struck the rear of a 2022 International semi-trailer, driven by 32-year-old Samuel T. Billin of Wyoming, Michigan.

The impact caused the Mountaineer to lodge underneath the trailer, resulting in a total loss for the vehicle. Thacker and a passenger in his vehicle both complained of neck pain and sustained minor abrasions. They were transported to Memorial Hospital by Dubois County EMS for further evaluation. Fortunately, no injuries were reported for Billin, and no citations were issued.

The Jasper Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Dubois County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police, Sternberg’s Wrecker Service, and Dubois County EMS.
