A significant federal grant of nearly $3 million has been allocated to the Pregnancy Promise Program, a statewide initiative designed to assist pregnant individuals and new parents dealing with substance use disorders. This funding will be used to expand the program’s services, particularly in rural and underserved regions.
Since its inception in 2021, the Pregnancy Promise Program has been dedicated to supporting pregnant Medicaid members with substance use disorders throughout their first year after childbirth. The program facilitates access to recovery resources, prenatal care, and mental health services, while also addressing broader needs such as housing stability, transportation, food security, and child care.
The 2023 report from the Indiana Maternal Mortality Review Committee highlights that substance use disorders and overdoses continue to significantly impact maternal health outcomes. The program’s annual report reveals that nearly 94% of participants maintained recovery and 83% of infants were born at healthy weights with shorter hospital stays. With the new grant, the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration plans to extend its reach by serving an additional 300 participants over the next three years. Partnerships with Centerstone and VOA Fresh Start will enhance support for uninsured and underinsured individuals. The program’s holistic approach not only focuses on maternal recovery but also ensures that infants receive comprehensive care and developmental support.
