On Friday, November 1st, Oakland City University (OCU) will celebrate its 139th founding anniversary, inviting the largest student body on campus since World War II, along with faculty, staff, and alumni. The event will feature a historical program, a meal, and updates about the university’s progress, culminating in a Gospel Night concert.
Founded in 1885 by the General Baptist, OCU began with ten acres donated by Col. William Cockrum and his wife, Lucretia. The first classes commenced in 1891 in rented spaces, with the first building completed in 1892.
This year, OCU is proud to announce a 10.2% increase in enrollment year-over-year and a remarkable 51% increase over the past four years. The university continues to fulfill its mission of promoting social advancement, earning recognition as the fifth-best university in the nation in U.S. News and World Report’s 2024-2025 Best Colleges rankings.
OCU President Dr. Ron Dempsey expressed his excitement about the university’s growth, stating, “The growth in our academic and athletic programs has fostered a renewed atmosphere on campus. Our students, professors, and student-athletes are achieving remarkable successes, contributing to a sense of pride and accomplishment that elevates our university.”
The celebration will culminate with a concert featuring the award-winning Hoppers and Triumphant Quartet at OCU’s Johnson Center. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. CT, with the concert beginning at 7:00 p.m. CT. Tickets are limited and can be purchased at https://www.oak.edu/gospel-night/.
