Next month, the Dubois County Courthouse and downtown will be glowing green as part of Operation Green Light for Veterans, a national initiative to honor the service and sacrifices of our veterans. From November 7th to 13th, Dubois County will join communities across the country in lighting up buildings and encouraging residents and businesses to change one light bulb to a green one to show support for veterans.

Operation Green Light serves as a reminder that we are here for our veterans, recognizing the courage and dedication of the men and women who have served in uniform. The initiative builds on the legacy of Veterans Day, established in 1954 by President Eisenhower, to honor those who fought to protect the nation’s freedoms.

This Veterans Day, on November 11, we will come together to celebrate the bravery and selflessness of all those who have served. Since the holiday’s creation, millions of Americans have continued to answer the call, including many Dubois County residents.

Unfortunately, transitioning from military to civilian life remains a challenge for many veterans, with evidence showing a heightened risk of suicide among those newly separated from the service. To combat this, veterans in crisis can reach out to the Veterans Crisis Line by dialing 988 and pressing 1 or texting 838255 for immediate support.

By participating in Operation Green Light, you send a powerful message to veterans that they are seen, appreciated, and supported. While the focus is on Veterans Day week, participants are encouraged to continue shining green lights year-round as a symbol of hope and respect.

In addition to raising awareness, the initiative highlights local resources available to veterans and their families. The Dubois County Veterans Service Office, which serves hundreds of veterans, is available to assist with federal and state benefits, employment support, medical appointments, and connecting veterans with peers for help during the transition to civilian life. For more information, veterans can contact the office at 812-481-7090.

This Veterans Day, let’s light up Dubois County in green and show our veterans that we are here for them, today and always. Join Operation Green Light and make a difference.
