Perry Central Junior High School student Aubrey Decker has been recognized for her exceptional writing skills, winning the local American Legion Auxiliary Americanism essay contest.
Decker, an 8th grader at Perry Central School Corporation, impressed judges with her essay addressing this year’s theme, “What does America the Beautiful mean to me (regarding veterans and our military)?”
The annual contest, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, aims to promote patriotism and Americanism values among young students across the country. The competition encourages students to reflect on America’s history, principles, and the sacrifices made by veterans and military personnel.
The American Legion Auxiliary, founded in 1919, is one of the nation’s largest patriotic women’s service organizations. Through its Americanism programs, the organization works to instill the ideals of freedom and democracy in America’s youth while supporting veterans, military, and their families.
Students participating in the contest develop critical thinking skills while learning about the sacrifices made by those who have served in the armed forces. The competition is typically divided into grade-level categories, with winners advancing to district, state, and potentially national levels.
Perry Central School Corporation, located in rural southern Indiana, has a history of encouraging student participation in civics-oriented competitions and community activities. The school serves students from Leopold and surrounding communities in Perry County.
