The City of Petersburg in Pike County has begun its annual hydrant-flushing program, which will continue throughout the week of April 14. This routine maintenance is a key part of the city’s efforts to maintain the quality and reliability of its water distribution system.
Hydrant flushing helps clear out mineral deposits and sediment that can build up in the water mains over time. It also allows city crews to check that fire hydrants are functioning properly. Residents may notice temporary changes in water pressure or discolored water as a result of this work.
Any discoloration is caused by naturally occurring minerals and sediment stirred up during flushing. While the water may appear cloudy or rusty, it remains safe for drinking, cooking, and bathing. Residents are advised to run cold water for a few minutes if discoloration is observed and wait until the water runs clear before doing laundry.
The Petersburg Water Department is located at 704 Main Street and operates Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Anyone with questions or concerns can call the department at 812-354-8707.
