Starting July 1, a $2 per pack cigarette tax increase passed by Indiana lawmakers will take effect. The tax hike is aimed at reducing tobacco use and helping those already addicted to quit.

Health advocates say the increase will prevent around 7,000 youth from becoming adult smokers and help an estimated 32,400 adults quit smoking. The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network praised the measure, calling it a significant victory in the fight against cancer and a move that will improve the health of Hoosiers.

In addition to cigarettes, taxes on other tobacco products will also increase. Quit Now Indiana is encouraging individuals ready to quit to call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for 24/7 access to professional coaches, counseling, and resources to support their efforts.
