Three Spencer County Sheriff’s Office members recently graduated from a leadership program that brings military academy principles into modern policing. Chief Deputy Ryan Parsley, Lieutenant Ron Harper, and Senior Deputy Damian Williams finished the West Point Leadership Program on November 10, joining over 150 Indiana law enforcement professionals who have completed the course since 2022.

The Indiana Sheriffs’ Association partners with the National Command & Staff College to deliver the training, which adapts leadership concepts from the United States Military Academy at West Point. Participants work through online modules, group discussions, and practical assignments designed to translate theory into everyday police work.

Sheriff Sherri Heichelbech stated the training strengthens both the department and Spencer County itself. She noted that the three graduates represent the kind of professional development that will shape law enforcement’s future in the area. Dr. Dave Mather led the course, bringing more than 30 years of law enforcement and leadership experience to the instruction.

During graduation, National Command & Staff College CEO Jeff Kingsfield discussed leadership elasticity, describing it as the capacity to handle pressure, reorganize after difficult situations, and emerge with greater strength. The program continues to expand across Indiana as agencies recognize the value of structured leadership development.
