Catherine M. Schaefer, 86, of St. Meinrad, passed away at her home on Friday, August 11, 2017.

Catherine was born October 9, 1930 in Covington, KY to Richard and Laura (Volz) Armstrong. She married Melvin Schaefer on August 21, 1954 in St. Meinrad Archabbey Church. Melvin preceded her in death on July 22, 1985.

Catherine was retired from Spencer Industries. She was a member of St. Meinrad American Legion Auxiliary Post 366 and St. Meinrad Catholic Church.

Catherine is survived by six sons, Roger (Peggy) Schaefer of Dale, David (Faith) Schaefer, George (Lisa) Schaefer, Scott Schaefer Evan (Marsha) Schaefer and Barry (Amy) Schaefer all of St. Meinrad; two daughters, Laural (Randy) Gehlhausen of Ferdinand and Anita (Dennis) Voegerl of Huntingburg; one sister, Irene (Jim) Seitz of Jasper; fifteen grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Catherine was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Lela Schaefer in infancy and two sisters, Mildred Meyer and Betty Jenkins.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10:00 AM CDT in St. Meinrad Catholic Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday from 1-7:00 PM CDT at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand and Tuesday from 9:00 AM CDT until time of service at the church.

Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Meinrad Catholic Church or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
