Paul C. Schitter, age 83 of Ireland, Indiana, passed away at 5:50 a.m. on Sunday, June 3, 2018 at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper, IN.

Paul was born in Ireland, Indiana on December 25, 1934 to Harry and Laura (Burke) Schitter.   He married Alma Sendelweck on June 18, 1955 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland.

He worked as a truck driver for Martin Renner Corporation for many years, and then retired from the Dubois County Highway Department.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, a lifetime member of the Ireland Sportsman’s Club, a charter member of the Ireland Knights of Columbus, a member of the Jasper Moose Lodge 1175 and the Ireland Historical Society.

Paul played baseball and basketball in high school, and then played baseball for the Ireland Merchants in the Deer Trail League for over 20 years.   He was a lifelong bowler, an avid hunter and fisherman, and an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Indiana Pacers fan.

Surviving is his wife, Alma Schitter of Ireland, one son, Jerald Schitter (Elaine), Jasper, four daughters, Janet Schitter, Jasper, Kathy Schitter, Newburgh, IN, Karyn Borden (Randy), Portersville,  Lori Hopf (Kurt), Celestine, seven grandchildren, Jenna Hochmeister, Ben Schitter, Brock Hopf, Brittany Jarboe, Kyla Borden, Nick Borden, and Bailey Hopf, five great-grandchildren, Reagan, Henry and Ben Hochmeister, and Paul and Quinn Schitter.

Preceding him in death were two sisters, Delores Kunkel and Mary Catherine Persohn, and two brothers, Rudy and Denny Schitter.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Paul C. Schitter will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 7, 2018 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, Indiana with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

A visitation will be held from 2:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper.  The rosary will be prayed at 1:45 p.m.  The Ireland Knights of Columbus will perform a memorial service at 6:00 p.m.  The Jasper Moose will conduct a memorial service at 6:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Ireland Historical Society, or a favorite charity.
