The City of Jasper Wednesday was named a 2018 Community Placemaking Award winner in the 10,000 to 20,000 population category by Accelerate Indiana Municipalities.

The city receive its award during the Accelerate Indiana Municipalities Annual Awards Luncheon presented by Umbaugh at their 2018 Ideas Summit in French Lick. Accelerate Indiana Municipalities serves as an advocate for Indiana municipalities,

The city was honored for The Parklands project, which converted a private golf course and the surrounding woodlands into a nature-based public space. Jasper spent several years acquiring the 75 acres necessary to bring the project to fruition.

Accelerate Indiana Municipalities CEO Matt Greller says the Parklands project is one of the most ambitious placemaking projects he’s seen.

He says the expansive project, in addition to being an economic driver for the city, is going to be a recreational destination for people all around the region. He added that the community really hit a home run with The Parklands and is excited to see the accolades they are receiving.

In its 42nd year, the Accelerate Indiana Municipalities Annual Awards program recognizes communities and individuals in municipal government for excellence and outstanding achievement. A nine-member panel of qualified judges selected this year’s winners from a competitive field of nominees from around the state.
