Authorities say high-speed and the lack of seatbelt use were likely contributors to injuries sustained by a pair of Jasper teens after they were thrown from the pickup they were riding in Thursday morning in Northeast Dubois County.

The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department says just after 7:30 am yesterday, the truck driven by 18-year old Nicholas Burgan of Jasper was northbound on Dubois Road Northeast about a half mile north of County Road 735 East northeast of Dubois when deputies say Burgan entered a curve at high-speed, went off the road to the right into a field causing the vehicle to overturn twice before coming to a rest.

Authorities say Burgan and a passenger, 16-year old Tristen Matheis also of Jasper were not restrained, were both ejected from the vehicle and thrown about 25 feet.

They eventually were able to call 911 for help.

Burgan and Matheis were taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital in Jasper for treatment of their injuries. Burgan was immediately flown to St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville for treatment of a possible head injury. Authorities say Mathies had a possible arm and shoulder injury.

Deputies say drugs and/or alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash. They added that both Burgan and Mathies suffered more significant injuries from not being restrained and from being ejected from the vehicle.

Police remind everyone that seatbelt use is not only the law, it prevents many serious injuries and deaths.

The Burgan pickup was a total loss and no charges were filed.

The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by First Responders with the Dubois Volunteer Fire Department and Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services.
