Celestine Elementary School is officially closing its doors for good at the end of the 2019-2020 school year.

The Northeast Dubois School Board made the decision after a unanimous vote at last night’s meeting.

Celestine Elementary’s enrollment figures are projected to decrease after the 2018-19 school year saw just 85 students attend the school.

The five members of the Northeast Dubois School Board saw this, along with future decreased funding for the school corporation, as justifiable reasons to shut down the school.

The current referendum that boosts the school corporation’s funding ends in 2023 and the board will not seek a second referendum to increase funding.

The school board’s next priorities will be to figure out how to arrange the different grades into the corporation’s current buildings with a renovation to Northeast Dubois High School imminent.
