The Indiana State Police is accepting applications for the 87th Recruit Academy, open to both traditional and lateral applicants. Probationary Troopers who graduate from the 87th Recruit Academy and successfully complete their Field Training Officer (FTO) program will receive a one-time cash bonus of $5,000 (taxable), in addition to their regular salary.

Basic Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Must be at least 21 and less than 40 years of age by the appointment date of July 17, 2025 (for traditional applicants)
- Must meet a minimum vision standard of 20/50 acuity in each eye and 20/50 distant binocular acuity in both eyes (corrected or uncorrected)
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Must be willing to reside and serve anywhere within Indiana as designated by the Superintendent
- Must be a high school graduate or have a general equivalency diploma (GED or HSE)
Current Law Enforcement Officers: Current law enforcement officers must be full-time merit officers with a minimum of three continuous years of service by December 11, 2024. Officers may be assigned to their current district of residence. Out-of-state officers meeting the three-year service requirement by December 11, 2024, may be assigned to their district of choice if their home state certification is equivalent to Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board standards.
Lateral recruits will undergo periodic performance reviews by the Training Academy staff. Graduation for lateral recruits is scheduled for June 5, 2025. If a recruit’s performance does not meet the graduation criteria, they may have the option to transfer to the traditional recruit academy, with a graduation date of July 17, 2025.

Recruits of the 87th Recruit Academy are offered a comprehensive health care plan that includes medical, dental, vision, and pharmacy coverage for both current and retired employees, as well as their families, until age 65. The Indiana State Police pension program provides a lifetime pension after 25 years of service. Additional benefits include disability coverage and life insurance. Student loan forgiveness programs are also available through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.
