Dorothy Mae “Dottie” Mathies, age 91, of Jasper, Indiana, passed away at 10:35 a.m. on Monday, September 2, 2024, at home surrounded by family. 

Dottie was born in St. Anthony, Indiana, on June 16, 1933, to Paul and Anna (Vonderheide) Ehrman.  She was the last living survivor of Paul and Anna’s children.  She married Robert O. “Bob” Mathies on September 25, 1954, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony, Indiana.  He preceded her in death on January 10, 2009.

She was a 1951 graduate of Jasper High School.

She was a homemaker and also a receptionist at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Huntingburg for 31 years.

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana, where she was a member of the Blessed Virgin Sodality, attended and volunteered on CHRP weekends, attended adoration hours at both Holy Family and Precious Blood Catholic Church, visited nursing home patients, was on the bereavement committee, and was instrumental in the initiation of the Precious Angels Monument.  She was also a member of the St. Anthony Community Center.

She enjoyed playing cards and bingo, and spending time with her family, especially her children and grandchildren.

Surviving are three daughters, Jeannie (Lenny) Schepers, Brenda (Alan) Stenftenagel, and Diane (Garrett “Beaner”) Henke, all of Jasper, IN, five sons, Gary Mathies, St. Anthony, IN, Randy (Barbara) Mathies and Kevin L. (Beth) Mathies, both of Huntingburg, IN, and Brian (Kathi) Mathies and Scott Mathies, both of Jasper, IN, one daughter-in-law, Sandy (John) Seng, Jasper, IN, 14 grandchildren, four step grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 14 step great grandchildren, three “special” great grandchildren, one brother-in-law, Ray Hoffman, St. Anthony, IN, and many nieces and nephews,

Preceding her in death besides her husband are one son, Kurt Mathies, one son-in-law, James Wendholt, one great grandson, Eli Peyton Mathies, and four sisters, Rose Marie Steltenpohl, Irene Carter, Mildred Fischer, and Bonnie Hoffman, 

A Mass of Christian Burial for Dorothy Mae “Dottie” Mathies will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 6, 2024 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana, with entombment to follow in the Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum in Jasper.

A visitation will be held from 2:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper, Indiana, and one hour before the Mass time at the Church on Friday from 9:00-10:00 a.m.  The Blessed Virgin Sodality of Holy Family Catholic Church will pray a rosary at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home on Thursday.
