Dubois County Prosecutor Beth Schroeder has filed one count of murder against Jakahri Keyshaun Curry, 20, of Macon, Georgia, following a fatal shooting at the SureStay Hotel in Jasper on Thursday, December 19, 2024.

The incident stemmed from a confrontation between Curry and Lawrence Jonte Walker, 27, of Cleveland, Ohio. During the altercation, Curry allegedly fired multiple shots at Walker. Individuals at the scene rushed Walker to Deaconess Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Curry then entered the hotel and was taken into custody by police without incident.

On Friday, December 20, 2024, the Dubois County Prosecutor’s Office sought a 72-hour hold from the Dubois Circuit Court to allow additional time to evaluate the case and determine charges. The court approved the request and scheduled an initial hearing for Monday, December 23, 2024. Curry was held without bond in the interim.

During the December 23 hearing, Judge Nathan Verkamp formally addressed the murder charge against Curry under Cause No. 19C01-2412-MR-001337. Prosecutor Schroeder requested Curry be held without bond, citing Indiana Code 35-33-8-2. The court granted this request.

The case is now set for a status hearing on February 18, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. A jury trial is scheduled for April 22, 2025.
