Gary Scott Cornwell, 73, of Bretzville passed away Sunday March 15, 2026 at his home. Gary was born on May 28, 1952 in Bedford, Indiana to Roger and Erlena (Williams) Cornwell.

Gary graduated from Orleans High School, and continued his education and Indiana State University in Terre Haute. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from ISU. Gary taught for 33 years at Southeast Dubois County School Corporation. He also worked as a radio color analyst at WITZ, WQKZ, and WUME. Gary was a proud and passionate supporter of Forest Park football and basketball, and a prominent voice on the radio. Gary was a member of Redemption Church in Jasper, a member of Indiana State Teacher’s Association, United States Auto Club, Forest Park Letterman’s Club, and was honored as a Kentucky Colonel. Gary established the Teresa Jean Brooks Memorial Scholarship in 2009 to honor a close friend, who was tragically killed in a 1977 car accident. Gary was a lifetime learner. He was knowledgeable in many subjects, and was a naturally good at conversation. Safe to say Gary never met a stranger. He always encouraged young adults to pursue a higher education. His smile was contagious, his spirit generous. He enjoyed “anything science”, the Monan Railroad, Porsches, Harleys, Indy Car Racing, and the New York Yankees. He was a Beatles and Rolling Stones fan, and loved collecting anything “Christmas”. He was a force of nature and was larger than life.

Surviving are his companion and life partner, Linda McIntosh of Jasper. Lisa and Brian Stephens of Santa Claus, Lance and Kristi Luegers of Milton, GA. One sister Rhonda Cornwell of Birmingham, AL. Niece, Crystal Sheetz Liberto of Scottsdale, AZ. Whitney Wallace, Jacqueline Sheetz of Tuscaloosa, AL. and Cassandra Sheetz of San Diego, CA. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Roger and Erlena Cornwell.

Services will be private at the Chapel of Our Sorrowful Mother in Ferdinand, with inurnment of cremains to follow. Pastor Darrel Land will officiate. Visitation will be held Sunday March 29th from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand.
