Leroy J. Schnaus, age 95, of Ireland, Indiana, passed away at 4:03 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2017, at home.

Leroy was born in Ireland, Indiana, on September 11, 1921 to Albert and Cecelia (Dick) Schnaus. He married Dorothy M. Mehringer on October 19, 1946, in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana.

Leroy was a lifetime farmer.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, the Ireland Historical Society, and he was a charter and 70 year member of the Ireland K of C, and a charter member of the Ireland Sportsman Club. He was a 30 year member of the Ireland Utilities Board, where he was an original member.

He was an avid sports fan, and especially enjoyed following the Jasper Wildcats, the Chicago Cubs, and Indiana University Basketball. He also enjoyed playing golf and cards, especially Sheepshead.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy M. Schnaus, Ireland, IN, one daughter, Linda Erny, and husband, Dave, Jasper, IN, three sons, Ken Schnaus, and his wife, Marilyn, Jasper, IN, Steve Schnaus, Loogootee, IN, and Kevin Schnaus, and his wife Mary, Jasper, IN, one son-in-law, Glen Werne, Jasper, IN, 13 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, three sisters, Martha Stenftenagel, and her husband, Joe, Jasper, IN, Anna Burger, Jasper, IN, and Betty Shelly, Greenwood, IN.

Preceding him in death are one daughter, Marilyn Werne, one daughter-in-law, Gerri Schnaus, and six brothers, Sylvester, Virgil, Robert, Albert Jr., Edward, and Larry Schnaus.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Leroy J. Schnaus will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, IN, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

A visitation will be held from 2:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. The Ireland K of C will have a memorial service at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the American Heart Association, or to the wishes of the family.
