Tuesday morning the Jasper Board of Public Works & Safety listened to updates or requests from various city departments as well as the public.

Jasper Fire Chief Kenny Hochgesang spoke about fire works caution and safety as the 4th of July holiday is around the corner.

20160628_080840Fire Chief Hochgesang stressed the importance of children being supervised by adults if they intend to use fireworks, as well as having a fire extinguisher near by. Fire Chief Hochgesang says time permitted for fireworks use is from 9 am til 11 am on a regular day and from 9 am till midnight on the 4th of July.

Fire Chief Hochgesang also told the Board of Public Works that bids for the Jasper Fire Department’s new rescue squad are in and estimated the delivery of the squad in around a year or so.

Also the city’s Director of Personnel, Safety, and Loss Control Cale Knies spoke about the SafeWise Award presented to the city as the 10th safest city in the state of Indiana. The award was presented this year to the Jasper Police Department.

Receiving the award was Assistant Police Chief Nathan Schmitt. Mayor Terry Seitz thanked and applauded the department as well as the citizens of Jasper for their part in being recognized for the award.

Meanwhile Assistant Police Chief Schmitt sought approval for the Operation Pull Over Grant and grant requirements in regard to officer pay during the blitz.

This grant includes areas of looking out for impaired drivers, those not wearing seat belts, aggressive driving, as well as the combination of all three. The operation will require the extra hours and allows the City of Jasper to provide extra patrolling.
