Esther C. Gutgsell, age 97, of Jasper, Indiana, passed away at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 27, 2017 at Brookside Village in Jasper.
Esther was born on May 8, 1919 in Ireland, Indiana, to Max and Elizabeth (Schuetter) Renner. She married Victor A. Gutgsell on December 9, 1944, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, Indiana. He preceded her in death on June 19, 1994.
Esther was a lifetime homemaker and worked at Jasper Glove Factory for 10 years.
She was a charter member of Holy Family Catholic Church, and a member of the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the V.F.W. Post #673 Auxiliary.
Esther and her family were recipients of the Holy Family School Distinguished Family Award.
She was an avid quilter, and enjoyed playing bingo, cooking, music, reading, and spending time with her grandchildren and her great grandchildren.
Surviving are seven children, Janis Seger (Gene), Huntingburg, IN, Thomas Gutgsell (Shelley), Jasper, IN, Daniel Gutgsell (Kathy), Jasper, Karen Primus (William), Vincennes, IN, Russell Gutgsell, and companion Brenda Strohmeyer, Jasper, IN, John Gutgsell (Julie), Jasper, IN, Lisa Birge (John), Jasper, IN, 15 grandchildren, two step grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one step great granddaughter, two sisters, Ruth Vonderschmitt, Jasper, IN, Wilma Jean Begle (Otto), Ferdinand, IN, and one sister-in-law, Rose Merkley, Huntingburg, IN.
Preceding her in death besides her husband are three sisters, Rita Lampert, Valeria Bellner, Beatrice Schroeder, and one brother, Albert Renner.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Esther C. Gutgsell will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 3, 2017, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper, with entombment to follow in the Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum in Jasper.
A visitation will be held from 2:00-8:00 p.m. at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper on Thursday, March 2, 2017. The Ladies of the Blessed Virgin Sodality will pray a rosary at 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
