Margaret J. Steffen, age 97, of Jasper, Indiana, passed away at 2:05 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2019, at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper, Indiana.

Margaret was born in Washington, Indiana, on March 15, 1922, to Walter and Mary (Grill) Kidd.  She married John G. Steffen on January 18, 1945, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Washington, Indiana.  He preceded her in death on June 5, 2005.

Margaret worked at Crane Navel Base during WWII.  She then retired from Corbin’s Ready to Wear Store, where she had worked for 29 years.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, D of I, St. Ann’s, and Psi Iota Xi.

She enjoyed sewing, quilting, playing cards with her friends, going on family vacations, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She was an avid  Jasper sports fan, and attended many of the events and most recently listened to every football, baseball, and basketball game on the radio.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Mehringer, and fiancé, James Rueff, Jasper, IN, Mary Beth (Charles) Delaney, Houston, TX, five grandchildren, Jennifer (Phil) Ball, Mark D. (Tammy) Mehringer, Kristi (Joshua) Dragan, Julie Truesdale, and Eric J. (Kristen) Mehringer, and 10  great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death besides her husband are one sister, Alice McBrayer, and two brothers, John “Jack” and Robert L. Kidd.

Funeral services for Margaret J. Steffen will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, IN, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper, IN.

A visitation will be held from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper, Indiana. The D of I and St. Ann’s Society will pray a rosary at 2:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Heart to Heart Hospice, or to a favorite charity.
