Janet Ann (Schmett) Chanley, age 79, of Huntingburg, died at 2:49 p.m., Friday, July 5, 2024, at Heritage Pointe in Huntington, Indiana.

                She was born November 11, 1944, in Huntingburg, Indiana, to Albert and Sarah (Maxey) Schmett of Huntingburg.  She married Elwayne Chanley on August 29, 1964, at Salem United Church of Christ in Huntingburg.  Janet and her husband Elwayne, and brother Mike Schmett formed Schmett Farms, Inc. of which she was the secretary for many years.  Janet also served as church secretary for Salem United Church of Christ for several years and later was a relay for life coordinator for Southwestern Indiana for the American Cancer Society.

                Janet enjoyed spending time with the many friends she made throughout the years.  She especially enjoyed spending time with her granddaughter and great-grandchildren who affectionately called her GGJ.

                She is survived by her son, Scott W. Chanley and his wife Sarah Tagtmeyer of Huntington, Indiana; her granddaughter, Lauren (Daniel) Beer of Fort Wayne, Indiana; two great-grandchildren, Amelia and Griffin Beer; and her sister-in-law, Bonnie Schmett of Huntingburg.

Janet was preceded in death by her husband, Elwayne Chanley, who died May 3, 2001; parents, Albert and Sarah Schmett; and two brothers, Gerald and Mike (Linda) Schmett of Huntingburg.

                Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at Salem United Church of Christ in Huntingburg with burial to follow at Fairmount Cemetery, Huntingburg.  Rev. Jeff Donihue will officiate at the service.

                Friends may call for visitation at Salem United Church of Christ from 9:00-11:00 a.m., Tuesday, the morning of the funeral.  Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.  In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Salem United Church of Christ, Huntingburg.  Condolences may be shared online at:  www.nassandson.com
