Michael “Mike” E. Toby, age 57, of Holland, passed away at 11:40 p.m., on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, at his home in Holland.

mike-toby-obit-photo778He was born June 2, 1959, in Huntingburg, Indiana to Joseph Toby, Sr. and Caroline (Hasenour) Toby. He married Carla K. Veatch on October 4, 1980, in Celestine. Mike was employed as a Screening Officer at the Branchville Correctional Facility in Branchville, Indiana. Mike worked in Indiana’s prison system for 26 years. He started his career at the Indiana State Prison in 1990 and after three years transferred to the Branchville Correctional Facility in 1993 where he worked for 23 years. In 2004, he was promoted to Sergeant; and in 2007 took the position of Screening Officer. He was in charge of the Branchville Correctional Facility’s Honor Guard for 12 years; and did several years on the K9 and Emergency Squad. Mike was a former Porter County Sheriff’s Department reserve deputy. He enjoyed playing computer and video games; and any outdoor activities with his family including camping, disc golf, golf, and corn hole. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; and one brother, Ron “Butch” Toby.

He is survived by his wife, Carla K. Toby of Holland; two daughters, Andrea (William) McCammon of Owensville and Denise Toby of Holland; two sons, Brandon Toby of Evansville and Corey (Laura) Toby of Baton Rouge, LA; four brothers, Joe (Cheyanne) Toby Jr. of Jasper, Bill (Clara) Toby of Jasper, Dave (Jyl) Toby of Jasper and Tom (Reba) Toby of St. Anthony; five sisters, Caroline Sutton of St. Anthony, Betty (Terry) Forbes of St. Anthony, Mary (Charlie) Kline of Huntingburg, Darlene (Wesley) Brown of Smithfield, VA and Susie (Tom) Loven of Jasper; one grandson, Cade Toby; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Michael E. Toby will be held at 10:00 a.m., E.S.T., on Saturday, November 12, 2016, at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg with burial to follow at Wickliffe Cemetery in Wickliffe, Indiana. Services will be officiated by Henry Schwartz; and a standing vigil will be conducted by the Branchville Correctional Facility Honor Guard.

Friends may call for visitation at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg from 2:00-8:00 p.m., on Friday; and also from 9:00-10:00 a.m., on Saturday.
